Books a aspiring comic book artist must get ?

cancan asked:
I’m an aspiring comic book artist who is hoping to create and get a new comic book published sometimes in the future, and was wondering what books should I get to help me? The theme of mine will be about an indian girl wanting to be like a hero of legend, even after finding out he was a fake. There will be allot of kick butting.

Its expensive, but I’ve seen them at the bargain racks at Borders–
The Human Anatomy for Artist books…
Even if you are drawing cartoonish, it helps a lot.
“Creation: Artistic and Spiritual,” O. M. Aivanhov.
Most any art book will help you with your art, but for books about how to make a comic, you should get Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, and Will Eisner’s Comics & Sequential Art.
Understanding Comics is not a teaching manual, but it’s an in depth investigation into what a comic actually is, and how your mind processes information. It won’t show you how to do anything, but it will open your mind and show you what can be done. I’ve heard of companies using it as mandatory reading for computer programmers and systems designers to get them to open their minds up.
Will Eisner’s Comics & Sequential Art is THE book on how to make comics. The language that comics use was basically created by Eisner. He certainly wasn’t the first person to draw a comic, but he was the closest thing to DaVinci that comics have, contributing a mountain of techniques and methods.
Like Eli said, you should definitely get Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. You should also get his third book, “Making Comics.”
