In order for you to choose a fantastic gift for the anime fan in your life, you first need an idea of what anime series or at least what kind of anime series they enjoy. Find out by perusing their DVD collection or checking what they watch on TV. Once you know the series they like, here are some suggestions for surefire gifts for anime fans:

Manga

Manga is simply the Japanese version of comic books or graphic novels. Many anime series are based on a manga series. Any anime fan would love the original manga their favorite anime is based on. For original Japanese manga, you can usually find some on eBay and at Japanese importers like JustManga and Manga.com. For the most popular anime series, like Inuyasha, you can find English translated manga books at many major bookstores.

Live Action and Japanese Drama DVD’s

Some anime and manga series have a live action version, like Sailor Moon, that a Sailor Moon fan would likely be interested in. If your anime fan seems interested in Japanese culture, then consider getting them some Japanese TV drama series. There are many Japanese drama series aimed at tweens and teens that usually take place in school or high school. Check out Nodame Cantabile, Hana Yori Dango and Gokusen, each was based on anime or manga series or both. Look for these series at places like YesAsia and on eBay. Toys

Many anime fans become interested in Japanese culture through anime, especially since popular Japanese artists and bands are used on the soundtracks to the majority of anime series. You can get them the soundtrack to the series or even a few JPOP or JROCK CD’s. JPOP and JROCK is the abbreviation of Japanese pop and Japanese rock music. Find many artists at both YesAsia and eBay. Popular Japanese music artists include Ayumi Hamasaki (pop), Utada Hikaru (pop/R&B), Arashi (pop boy band), L’Arc-en-Ciel (rock band), Morning Musume (pop girl band) and many more.

Collectibles & Decorative Items

There are also many collectibles and decorative items available for some series. Consider animation cells, limited edition toys, photo albums, calendars, posters and more. Find these at YesAsia and eBay.

Clothing & Apparel

Some anime fans enjoy dressing up as their favorite character, this is called “cosplay”. Try to find out who their favorite character is and get them a costume or accessories. For instance, an Inuyasha fan would love a necklace like the one Inuyasha wears or a play sword like he uses. Or go all out and get them a full costume just like their favorite character. Language Books or Software

If your anime fan has a serious interest in Japanese culture, then consider getting them a book or audio learning set to help them learn, read and write Japanese. Food

From sushi to Pocky, if your anime fan has an interest in Japanese culture, they might like to try some of the food they have seen consumed in animes and dramas. Some suggestions include a sushi making kit, Japanese candy and gum, Pocky (a pretzel covered with chocolate), strange flavored Japanese versions of candy bars like KitKat and more. While the animated film has had a great deal of advancement in the Western part of the world it has been highly influential to Japanese entertainment as well. Manga anime films have been around for as long as Western animated films. These films, which include animation inspired by manga and can be based on anime productions in many cases, have been popular not only in Japanese entertainment but also for other parts of the world.

In 1945 Mitsuyo Seo was commissioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy to create the film Momotaro’s Divine Sea Warriors. This was Japan’s first full length manga anime film. This was used as a means of propaganda for the Japanese. It is highly believed that this film was heavily inspired by the 1940 Western animated film Fantasia.

Much of this industry was put on hold during the occupation of Japan by the United States. It would eventually resume in 1958 with Toei Animation’s Tale of the White Serpent. This and other films from Japan around this time are considered to be highly influenced by the Walt Disney Company’s productions. However, in 1968 Isao Takahata’s Hols: Prince of the Sun changed the pattern in that the film emphasized the director bringing one’s ideas to animation instead of using certain types of inspirations. 

The 1984 Hayao Miyazaki film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was important to the advancement of this type of film. Released in North America as Warriors of the Wind, this film was noted not only for its amazing animation but also for its strong messages of environmentalism. This helped to not only influence this form of Japanese entertainment to incorporate real life concerns but also to try and make anime films more lavish.

In the 1980s Katsuhiro Otomo created the successful manga series Akira. In 1988 he adapted it into a highly successful manga anime film. While this film was highly popular outside of Japan it was a commercial flop in Japan because of its incredibly high budget. This was the same for other manga anime films of the 1980s in that they worked with trying to be more lavish in production.

Today manga anime films are still made and are still popular. The 2004 film Innocence: Ghost in the Shell was featured at the Cannes Film Festival. Many of Miyazaki’s films have broken Japanese box office records as well.

Manga anime films are notable to the history of Japanese entertainment. These films have been influenced by manga and various Western influences. However, over the years these films have become influenced by original ideas including some outside of the manga field.

Foreign animation has become very popular in various parts of the world and one of the strongest is that of manga anime. All sorts of different styles of manga anime have been made. One of the most popular of these is super robot manga anime. This type of genre has been popular in Japan and has inspired a variety of programs.

 The concept of super robot manga anime is simple. What happens here is that an individual hero or a group of heroes control a giant robot or a series of giant robots that can combine into one great super fighter. The people involved are generally inside of the robot and will control the robot’s actions and functions as being a practical brain for the machine. This type of genre is noted in that the origins of the story are kept as mysterious ideas.

A typical super robot program in foreign animation works in a simple way. Because of the mysterious origin of the super robot in one of these programs there is hardly any reference to any origins. Instead it focuses on a villain of the week  format. This is where the super robot or robots and its controllers will fight and defeat an enemy in the course of an episode. In most cases these enemies will be in conjunction with a major enemy that may not be fought until the final episode of the series. Villains that are stronger or more vital to the main villain are generally fought in season finales or in major milestones in the series. This format has become influential to various animation programs over the years in other countries.

In 1956 Mitsuteru Yokoyama created the series Iron Man 28. This series would go on to television as Tetsujin 28-go, which is known outside of Japan as Gigantor. This is considered to be the first of these super robot programs. Go Nagai’s Mazinger Z, which was first introduced in manga and anime forms in 1972, was highly influential as well.

In the 1980s the Force Five series of foreign animation became highly popular outside of Japan. These programs included Grandizer, Spaceketeers and Dangard Ace. The Shogun Warriors line of toys from Mattel became popular as well. Also, the mid-1980s cartoon Voltron: Defender of the Universe became highly poplar in North America. This program was a condensation of some other super robot programs, including Golion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV.

Super robot manga anime is one of the most unique forms of foreign animation. This style of anime is one that deals with heroes controlling giant robots. As simple as the concept sounds it has become one of the most successful forms of anime ever to be made.
